Shirin Neshat.

Neshat’s work expresses the connection between women and nature. In a spiritual, artistic and feminist way, she shows how the flow and change of nature is reflected in the essence of a woman. A lot of her work shows the contrast between men and women in the sense that while men are rooted in tradition (particularly in Iranian culture) women are free flowing like nature and try to resist the restrictions tradition puts on women.

Lately I’ve been exploring Ana Mendieta’s work and she used to express the same themes in her work. I am guessing that Neshat must have been inspired by these works. I find the connection between nature and women very beautiful. This is helping me understand my connection with nature and how I relate that to art and spirituality.
